Calling in a new way
Calling in a new way

Ink on paper, 420 x 297mm

May 2022

This is a spell drawing, an incantation, an enchantment, calling in a new way. A handheld collection of wayside medicinal herbs, with Yarrow, Primrose, Daisy, Blackthorn, Dandelion, Nettle, Plantain, Hazel and Cleavers. These all herald Spring and with it new starts, new life and new ways. Calling in new ways to heal ourselves and heal the planet.

The mutual flourishing of people, plants and the planet is in our hands. The 17th century botanist, astrologer, physician and herbalist Nicholas Culpepper linked the astronomical rulers and properties of the planets with individual herbs, combining various sources of knowledge to both diagnose and heal. The herbs in this drawing, Cleavers, Comfrey, Nettle and Dog Rose are ruled by the Moon, Saturn, Mars and Venus respectively, and each planet is linked to a specific part of the hand. Each of these planets is read on the palm and fingers, allowing the mutual flourishing of plants, planets and people to literally be held in our hands.

Time with Crabapple before the last of the blossoms fell. I love this tree, which lives very near to my home on a small lane where it has lived for at least 100 years. European Crabapple, or Malus sylvestris which translates as Apple of the Forest, is the source all apples, cultivated and wild. The thorns on this branch show that it is truly wild and ancient.
